Will Fortune 500 Mandate Vaccines for all Employees?

Written by Techstaffer | Sep 2, 2023 9:05:25 AM

Recently, with the resumption of public activities and the reopening of the economy following over a year of isolation, the number of Covid-19 cases has reached its highest point. Notable among these cases is the Delta variant, which was only recently identified. As an effort to control the situation, certain Fortune 500 subsidiaries have implemented vaccination requirements. Fortune 500 and United Airlines, to name a few, have recently declared that employees will be mandated to receive the vaccination.

As a consequence of the vaccination regulations implemented by numerous government agencies and private corporations, a considerable number of personnel have begun to question the legality of such measures. Briefly, sure. Employers retain the authority to mandate employee vaccinations, classifying such actions as conditions of employment akin to job prerequisites.

Recent events have highlighted the controversy surrounding Chevron (NYSE: CVX), which has implemented a COVID-19 vaccination requirement for certain employees, new hires, and expatriates operating abroad. The American oil giant is reportedly considering expanding its recent vaccine mandate to its more than 47,000 employees, according to the Wall Street Journal; however, the company has not yet issued a public statement in response.

This initiative was implemented by the organization in an effort to halt the rapid transmission of COVID-19 and the Delta variant that recently emerged in the United States.

As of mid-August, Google News reports that there are 36,727,846 active Covid-19 cases in the United States. The highly contagious Delta variant is responsible for the most recent surge in Coronavirus cases, accounting for 80% to 87% of all cases in the United States as of July's conclusion, according to Science Magazine.

Many Fortune 500 companies, similar to Chevron, have implemented stringent vaccination requirements and additional anti-Covid measures to safeguard employees and ensure a seamless transition back to physical work. Delta Airlines recently declared that it would assess an extra $200 per month in health insurance premiums for unvaccinated personnel, in consideration of the possibility of COVID-19 infections, which have been notably accelerated by the exceptionally contagious Delta variant. According to Forbes, vaccination could have prevented more than 100,000 hospitalizations caused by the coronavirus in June and July; these hospitalizations cost the U.S. healthcare system approximately $2.3 billion. In light of the extensive accessibility of COVID-19 vaccines and the exorbitant expenses associated with hospitalizations, numerous other corporations may seek to restrict their health insurance liability through means such as insurance premium hikes, vaccine mandates, or the like.

Regarding Covid-19 vaccinations, the United States remains divided despite the critical nature of the current situation. Forbes reports in a recent article that approximately fifty percent of Gen-Z employees would resign if their coworkers were unvaccinated. This percentage is significantly lower among Gen-X and Millennial employees (40 and 36 percent, respectively). Conversely, the article states, "Approximately 44% of employees indicated they would contemplate quitting their jobs if required to receive vaccinations."

Given that educational institutions, recreational establishments, and enterprises have resumed in-person support following a 63.5% increase in 14-day cases in the United States, it is probable that the number of Covid-19 cases will increase domestically as well. The effectiveness of Chevron's employee vaccination requirement will be determined over the course of the coming weeks, and the organization will continue to provide updates to the press.

Added Fact:

Amidst the vaccine mandate discussions within Fortune 500 companies, it's crucial to highlight the role of telecommuting as a viable alternative for older employees, particularly those around the age of 60. With the rise in COVID-19 cases and the emergence of the Delta variant, many companies are revisiting their telecommuting policies to accommodate employees who are at a higher risk or have concerns about returning to physical workspaces. This approach not only aligns with public health guidelines but also offers a flexible solution for older employees, ensuring their safety and well-being while maintaining productivity and engagement in their roles. This aspect is particularly pertinent for those nearing retirement, who may prefer to avoid the risks associated with in-person work environments.

Added Analogy:

Navigating the complexities of vaccine mandates in Fortune 500 companies can be likened to a seasoned sea captain steering a large vessel through a dense fog. The fog represents the uncertain and rapidly evolving landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly with the emergence of the Delta variant. Just as the captain must make decisions based on the best available information and tools, despite limited visibility, these companies are making critical decisions about vaccine mandates to ensure the safety and well-being of their crew – the employees.

For the target audience, many of whom are nearing the end of their careers or have already retired, this situation is akin to watching the shoreline from the deck of a retiring ship. They have navigated many such fogs and understand the importance of steady leadership and informed decision-making in times of uncertainty. The actions of these large corporations, much like the captain's decisions, will set a course that impacts not only the current crew but also those who are disembarking, symbolizing the transition into retirement. The analogy reflects the careful balance of safety, responsibility, and adaptability that is crucial in these times, resonating with the experiences and perspectives of those in the later stages of their professional journeys.
